Relieve Fears and Phobias with Meridian Tapping

Have you been trying – unsuccessfully – to manage your fears and phobias?

Many of us have fears which can be big or small.  Sometimes, people develop irrational fears or phobias that they cannot control.  People may have a fear of flying, enclosed spaces, crowds, spiders, or speaking in public.  These fears or phobias can limit or even cripple their every day life.

There are many ways to conquer your fears and overcome your phobias.  Traditionally, people are exposed to their phobia or the thing they are afraid of in order to decondition them to the fear.  However, this technique can be uncomfortable and may even prove detrimental when not done the right way.

One technique that is rapidly gaining immense popularity is called EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques.  Although there is no scientific explanation for this method, thousands of success stories attest to the effectiveness of EFT.

What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is a type of energy therapy.  It brings healing by balancing the body’s energy system.  EFT works on the same principle as acupuncture, wherein patients are treated by manipulating their energy flow or “chi” using needles in their meridians or acupuncture points.

Your fear, phobia, pain, or disease may be caused by an imbalance or disruption in your chi.  EFT uses tapping techniques to restore balance within the body.  By tapping on the acupuncture or acupressure points, you can eliminate negative emotions like fear, anxiety, stress and phobia very quickly.

Meridian Tapping: What is it?

Meridian Tapping Techniques or MTT involves tapping on the acupressure points of the body.  It uses a variety of techniques, hence the official name is in the plural form.  Tapping therapy is a non-invasive, alternative healing method that you can perform on your own.  The sequential tapping procedure addresses the causes of your physical pain or psychological challenges, balancing the body’s energy and eliminating negative emotions.

You can use two fingers (index and middle) or all four fingers to tap on specific meridian points.  Many Meridian Tapping Techniques also require you to say certain phrases that can help you focus on your problem or ailment so that you can get the most benefit from the therapy.

How Does It Work?

Meridian Tapping is based on the same principles as acupressure and acupuncture.  Practitioners of these ancient, alternative methods of healing believe that negative emotions can disrupt the flow of energy in the body leading to chronic pain, migraines, stress, insomnia, panic attacks, fears and phobias.

By tapping on acupressure points with your finger, you can release negative energy and stimulate the smooth flow of your chi or energy.  MTT offers the same beneficial results as the needles used in acupuncture.

Meridian Tapping Techniques for Fears and Phobias

Meridian tapping as a healing method was discovered by accident by Dr. Roger Callahan, who was treating a patient with a phobia of water.  At the time, the patient was also experiencing stomach pain.  Knowing that there is an acupressure point on the cheekbone for the stomach, Dr. Callahan instructed her to tap her cheekbone in order to relieve her stomach pains.  Amazingly, her phobia of water also disappeared!

Extreme fears and phobias are rooted in an imbalance in your body energy.  EFT using meridian tapping can correct this imbalance or disruption.

Here is an example of the process:

First, identify the fear or phobia that you want to overcome.  Compose a statement acknowledging your fear followed by a positive affirmation of yourself as a person such as “Even though I’m terrified of heights, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway.”  Repeat the statement 3 times while tapping 7-10 times on the Karate Chop point located on the side of the small finger of your hand.

Next, perform a round of tapping on the meridian points beginning with the top or crown of your head and moving on to the eyebrow, side of the eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, underarm, and back to the head.  Tap each point 7 to 10 times while repeating your phobia such as “my fear of heights” or “my fear of public speaking.”

After one or two rounds assess how you feel.  Ideally, your negative emotions will have dissipated or disappeared.  Sometimes you may trigger a secondary issue.  Repeat the therapy until you have completely tamed your fears.

How to Get Over Bad Habits with Tapping

Almost everyone has a bad habit that they want to break.  Some bad habits are easy to get rid of but others can be more challenging.  Psychologists and other experts offer solutions to break undesirable habits, but these days one particular technique is rapidly gaining attention.  Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) using tapping has been shown to be an easy yet effective way to get over bad habits.

Some habits are simply annoying, such as nail biting, chronic coughing or clearing the throat, fidgeting, or procrastinating.  Others can pose a serious threat to your health or safety, such as smoking or excessive drinking.  Practitioners of EFT recommend tapping to free you from the most tenacious  bad habits.

What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT is based on the principle that illnesses and psychological disorders are caused by a disturbance in the body’s life energy.  Tapping on the acupuncture points restores balance and allows the body to heal itself.  Tapping on specific points can also relieve stress and the emotional ties binding you to the undesirable habit.

Tapping to Break Bad Habits

People often develop bad habits because they are stressed, bored, or want instant gratification.  You may avoid vacuuming or doing the dishes because you’d rather watch TV.  Nail biting and cracking the knuckles can be signs of stress or nervousness.  Many of these poor habits can be eliminated by tapping.  Tapping on specific meridian points removes stress and releases negative emotions. Although it will not happen overnight, you’ll start to feel better and eventually free yourself from bad habits.

If you have a number of bad habits, you can start working on one of them first.  Perhaps you want to break your habit of biting your nails, smoking, slouching, or running late.  Pick one of your bad habits, such as nail biting, and start tapping to get rid of it.

The great thing about tapping is that there’s nothing complicated about it and you can do it on your own.  Simply focus your thoughts on the habits you want to change and start tapping.  You can easily learn about what points to tap and where to start and end.  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with Emotional Freedom Techniques tapping.

How to Tackle Bad Habits with Tapping

If you want to break bad personal habits with tapping, the first thing to do is tap while acknowledging your bad habit.  Next, tap to get rid of the habit itself.  Keep in mind that you have to be patient and honest with yourself.  Do not expect to get overnight results.  Many people say you don’t have to follow a specific sequence of tapping points.  However, you may want to follow a particular routine.

EFT tapping always start with the Setup, wherein you acknowledge your bad habit, ailment, or emotional problem.  Tap on the Karate Chop Point 5-10 times while saying, “Even though I [state your bad habit], I intensely and wholly accept myself.”

Next, start a round of tapping through the following meridian points – the eyebrow, under eye, side of the eye, under the chin, under the nose, under arm, collarbone, and top of the head.  Use two fingers of your hands to tap 5 to 10 times.

While tapping, you can say words to acknowledge your bad habits, such as:

  • I often bite my nails when I’m nervous
  • Sometimes I bite my nails
  • I seldom bite my nails now
  • I choose not to bite my nails
  • Even though I bite my nails, I completely love and accept myself anyway
  • I don’t bite my nails now

You can make up the phrases you want to say as you go along.  The important thing is to stay focused on the issue rather than on the words.  Before long, you’ll see an improvement in your behavior and your bad habit will be a thing of the past.

Surrogate or Proxy Tapping

The effectiveness of EFT tapping is well known, but did you know that you can also perform EFT on behalf of somebody else?  This practice is called surrogate or proxy EFT.  It’s used for those who cannot tap for themselves, including children and animals.

Surrogate tapping is a relatively new practice but it’s attracting a lot of attention.  Naturally, everyone wants to know how to do it and if it’s really effective.

What Is Surrogate EFT?

Surrogate EFT involves performing Emotional Freedom Techniques or tapping for the benefit of another person.  It can be done for a variety of issues such as allergies, fears, discomfort or distress.  Parents may do it for a child who is afraid of flying or misbehaving.  Some people even use it for their pets or plants.

How To Do Surrogate Tapping

If you look around, you will find many occasions where proxy tapping is likely to be useful.  If you are on a plane with someone who is afraid of flying, you can tap on their behalf and help them lose their fear.

Before starting a proxy tapping session, make sure you are clear of negative issues and feel good about yourself.  Your EFT setup phrase may go something like this: Even though (name of person) has this problem, I completely accept him/her.  You can imagine a golden thread connecting you to the person (or animal) concerned.

Some people find it helpful to “be” the other person.  Image that you are the other person.  Your EFT setup phrase could go like this: Even though I have this problem, I completely accept myself.

Surrogate tapping proceeds just like any other tapping session.  Tap on the recommended meridian points while saying words of acceptance and affirmation.  Don’t worry about trying to find all the right words to say.  Believe in yourself and trust that what you are doing is best.

After the tapping session, give thanks for the healing and remove any connections you may have made to the person’s energy.  For example, you can imagine cutting the thread connecting you to the person.

How Effective Is Surrogate EFT?

Numerous cases of successful surrogate EFT have been reported, especially when using it to relieve physical pain and discomfort.  This method is also useful for releasing negative emotions as well as beliefs and decisions that are holding a person back.

Proxy tapping is not an easy task and should not be undertaken unless you are confident in your tapping skills.  You should also make sure you are free from negative issues yourself.

For successful surrogate tapping, you must learn to set your ego aside and focus on the needs of the other person.  You’ll get better at it the more you practice.  Keep in mind that you are only a channel or vessel for the healing process.

Some EFT experts recommend the use of NLP tools with surrogate EFT.  Role-playing is a strategy that people sometimes use in NLP, and it can also be used in proxy EFT.  Role playing allows you to take the viewpoint of another individual involved in the process, as well as the role of an outside spectator.  Viewing the issue from different perspectives can help resolve the problem more quickly.

Surrogate EFT Concerns

People may be reluctant to perform surrogate tapping, arguing that it may be “unfair” to the person concerned.  As long as your intentions are good, there should be no problems at all.  Proxy tapping should be done in a non-judgmental way, with the ultimate goal of releasing negative emotions and alleviating pain and discomfort.  Surrogate EFT is done not to control but to heal.

7 EFT Tapping Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

EFT tapping is simple and easy to learn, but did you know that it’s still possible to make mistakes?  Here are some of the common mistakes people make when tapping:

 1. Not Tapping Often Enough

Tapping should be done on a daily basis.  Experts recommend at least 5 minutes of tapping three or more times each day.  At the very least, do some tapping in the morning before getting out of bed, and again at night before falling asleep.  A few issues can be cleared up with a minute of tapping, but the majority will require more time and attention.  More frequent tapping can also clear bigger problems more quickly.

2. Not Tapping Long Enough

Many people stop too soon during a tapping session.  Too often, beginners tap for few rounds and give up when they feel they’re not getting the results they were hoping for.  Tapping should take 10-30 minutes, or even longer.  Devoting enough time to tapping will make a lot of difference.

Some people will also stop when they begin to feel better.  Don’t settle for a bit of relief; keep on tapping until the energy starts flowing and you feel really good.

3. Not Being Specific Enough

Global or general statements can help get you started in the right direction while tapping, but after that you have to be more specific.  You can setup with a statement like “Even though I feel anxious right now, I deeply and completely accept myself.”  After doing a couple of rounds of the general statement, you can go down to specifics such as “Even though I feel anxious about my upcoming job interview, I deeply and completely accept myself.”  You’ll get better results when you’re focused on a specific issue.

4. Wanting To Do The Tapping Perfectly Right Away

Some people want to be “perfect” and may put off tapping until they feel they are able to do it correctly.  As a result they only try the technique a few times, or not at all.

Getting started on tapping is more important than being perfect.  You can still get good results even if you think your technique is less than perfect.  Start with the basic tapping points and be sure to tap daily to develop your EFT skills.

5. Not Tuning Into The Feelings

Don’t forget that tapping clears emotional energy from your body.  Hence, it’s important to tune into your feelings and not merely “think” about them.  If your psychological difficulties these days are the result of embarrassing childhood memories, try to recall how you felt at the time.  Old feelings of shame, hurt and anger will sometimes resurface when you tap.  Try to resurrect these feelings and you will get more out of your tapping sessions.

6. Expecting All Results From Tapping To Be Permanent

You can’t expect 100% positive results all the time, and this is true not only for EFT but for all healing methods as well.  Don’t get frustrated or discouraged if an issue or part of it comes back.  Some people do get permanent results but in many cases you may have to do more tapping to get rid of the issue completely.

If you have a problem that keeps coming back, this could mean that other aspects or a root cause needs to be uncovered and addressed first.

7. Sticking To EFT Basics Only

In order to master EFT and reap its full benefits, you have to invest time and effort to gain skill and develop your intuition.  It’s not enough to “go through the motions”.  Harness your intuition and use it to seek out the most effective tapping techniques and peel away the emotions and root causes of your problems.
